Business Services Department Overview
About Us:
The Business Services Department includes Payroll, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Business Administration, General Accounting, Scholarships, Legal and Risk Management. Payroll is responsible for ensuring that roughly 700 employees are paid accurately and on time. Finance functions include payable payment to third parties, review of school-based accounting records, support to schools on accounting-related matters, external billings and receiving of funds, preparing the district budget, monitoring revenues and expenditures, preparing financial statements, and administering scholarships and providing accounting guidance to schools. The Risk Management function looks after insurance and other risk mitigation-related matters.
Department Vision:
To ensure that the School District manages its finances, payroll and corporate affairs in line with the federal and provincial statutory and legislative requirements. Additionally, to align financial and business functions to support the SD48 Board Strategic Plan and Education Plan by designing, implementing and monitoring financial policies, procedures, systems and internal controls.

- Continued professional development by SD48 finance, payroll, and business services staff to maintain and build capacity on industry best practices and stay informed on the most relevant statutory and legislative requirements.
- Build the business and fiscal capacity of all leaders within SD48 by maintaining a customer service mindset.
- Maintain informed, consultative and collaborative decision-making with all SD48 leaders and stakeholders.
- Modernize and align corporate and finance enterprise systems for more streamlined, efficient, and effective decision-making.
