BAA Courses

Our school district has developed Board/Authority Authorized (BAA) courses to help meet local community needs while providing choice and flexibility for students.

These courses were authorized by the Board of Education, as per requirements set by the Ministry of Education and Childcare.

Agricultural Leadership (10-12)

Agricultural Leadership provides students with opportunities to contribute to the school farm and local community. Students will develop the organizational tools necessary to perform a leadership role. The course will teach students to plan and implement programs that will benefit others in the school and community at large.

Students in grade 10 will be mentored by students in grade 11; grade 11 students will be mentored by students in grade 12.

Applications of Digital Literacy (10)

Athletic Leadership (10-12)

Athletic Leadership provides students with an athletics focused opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills while developing responsibility, creativity, and self-confidence.

Students will contribute to a variety of athletics-related projects/activities within the school and community. Students will develop lifelong skills in the areas of goal-setting, time management, communication skills, school and community service, fundraising, event planning, problem-solving/decision making, and stress management.

Bicycle Maintenance and Repair (11)

This course is open to students in all grades. Learn the technical aspects of how a bike works and learn how to maintain it. Gain the knowledge required to service your brakes, your drivetrain, and your wheels. Understand the basics of proper bike set-up and gain product knowledge of various frames and components. Students will have the opportunity to service the school bicycles, or their own but the purchasing of parts for personal bikes will be the responsibility of the owner.

English Language Learning A & B (10-12)

We welcome all English language learners (ELLs) into our communities, and celebrate the diverse cultural, social, academic, and linguistic backgrounds that they bring to the classroom.

The intention of this course is to cultivate a classroom environment that embraces this diversity, while at they same time supporting English Language Learners as they develop their proficiency with English, and gain a deeper understanding of Canadian culture and identity.

Farm Studies (10-12)

This hands-on, experiential course will consist of both classroom and fieldwork in the farm. Classroom learning will consist of exploring local food production and consumption, and practical ways to integrate concepts of food safety, agricultural issues and sustainability. Farm fieldwork will include crop planning, seed starting, planting, weeding, harvesting, greenhouse management, pest management, soil health, crop storage, and record keeping.

Food grown on the farm will be distributed to a variety of school and community groups, including foods and cafeteria programs.

Hockey Academy Skills (10-12)

Hockey Academy Skills is designed to help students learn and improve their hockey skills on the ice, and well as to engage in dryland training activities to further improve physical strength and conditioning for hockey-related movements.

Along with a focus on hockey skills to improve on-ice performance, students will learn about the importance of health, fitness, and nutrition for performance, injury prevention, and lifelong healthy habits.

Hockey is at its core a team sport where every member of the team has a role to play and contributes to the community of players. In and outside of hockey, leadership, team-building, and volunteer skills will be emphasized for the students to provide opportunities for life-long learning that extend far outside the realm of the hockey rink.

Indigenous Leadership (10-12)

This Leadership course is based on an Indigenous worldview and specifically seeks to foster connections to the local First Nations community, such as those of the Liĺwat and Sḵwxwú7mesh First Nations.

Students contribute to various projects/activities within the school and community focused on serving Indigenous communities, such as Orange Shirt Day and the 24-Hour Drum. Students develop lifelong skills in the areas of self-image, goal-setting, time management, communication skills, school and community service, fundraising, event planning, problem-solving/decision making and an understanding of various leadership styles.

Learning Strategies & Self-Efficacy (10-12)

This course provides flexible and personalized learning support for students with academic and/or social/emotional challenges. Students will develop an understanding of themselves as learners, and learn strategies to support their learning and overcome challenges. Throughout, self-efficacy will be a focus. Self- efficacy is an individual’s belief in their ability to successfully accomplish a task or goal.

This course is designed to identify student strengths, as well as areas of development that may have been identified as a barrier to reaching a students’ full potential. Students will identify their personal values, and learn to connect their decision-making and interpersonal relations relative to their influence. The course supports students as they work towards becoming independent, successful, and self-aware.

Peer Tutoring (11-12)

This participatory course is designed to provide students with opportunities to develop individual skills and knowledge of teaching and learning, while supporting and encouraging their peers within the school community.

Students will work under the supervision of a teacher to provide assistance to students as individuals and/or small groups in a variety of learning activities. Students will develop an understanding of individual academic, social, and cultural differences and the influence of group dynamics. Students will learn to use a variety of approaches, techniques, and skills to assist other students’ learning processes. Students will develop skills in learning/teaching styles, communication, interpersonal relations, leadership, teamwork, and conflict management. Students will apply those skills in activities such as the teaching of mini-lessons to peers, and the supported development of appropriate learning materials. Peer Tutors will be role models in their respective school communities.

Psychology (12)

Psychology 12 will introduce students to the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes. Students will learn about the some of the fields of psychology and will apply scientific principles and understandings to real-world issues and problems that are relevant to their everyday lives.

This relevant, engaging, and ethically challenging curriculum will create a foundation for understanding themselves and others, how to question commonly held beliefs, and ways in which they can contribute to the knowledge base and their community.

Soccer Academy - Futsal Skills (10-12)

Futsal Skills helps students reach their potential through a combination of soccer and futsal programming. Included in this academy are technical skills and team development, strength and conditioning, injury prevention, sports psychology and nutrition education, coaching methodology, and career development in the areas of health and sports.

Students participate in leadership activities that extend beyond the soccer pitc,including fundraising and contributing to enhancing school culture and community events.

Student Leadership (10-12)

This course offers an in-depth but practical look at leadership styles, perspectives, activities, and qualities in a flexible and adaptable format. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills while developing responsibility, self-confidence and reflection, and community/school centered engagement.

Students will develop skills in a variety of areas including supporting school spirit, motivating and supporting peers, engaging with the local and global community, delegating and organizing events, public speaking, self-reflection, etc. Site context and student choice will determine particular areas of focus, as leadership can take many forms. This course will also allow students the opportunity to acquire evidence of their learning within each different competency, which can be used towards their graduation capstone projects.

Ucwalmícwts Language & Culture (10-12)

This course is organized into seasonal themes that follow traditional ways.

Students collaborate and give input into areas of interest that they wish to learn or further develop. All students are welcome regardless of their current levels of understanding in the areas of culture, language use, and language comprehension.
