A Special Air Quality Statement has been issued for our region due to wildfire smoke. Smoke levels can shift quickly and vary across locations, increasing potential health risks. Schools have been advised to take precautionary measures, including limiting outdoor activities. HVAC systems with MERV-13 filters are running to help maintain indoor air quality. On Thursday, May 22, students, staff, families, and elders gathered at Totem Hall on the unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw for the year-end Indigenous Youth Leadership Gathering. The day featured vibrant singing and dancing, as well as engaging workshops, as part of a celebration of the leadership, culture, and dedication of Indigenous youth across the district. May 5 is Red Dress Day, a National Day of Awareness and Action honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited People (MMIWG2S+). Originating from the REDress Project by Métis artist Jaime Black, this day is marked by red dresses displayed in public spaces and worn in solidarity. We invite our Sea to Sky community to reflect, remember, and stand in allyship.

Premier David Eby has declared Friday, May 2, 2025, as a provincial day of remembrance and mourning to honour the victims of the Lapu Lapu tragedy. This day offers an opportunity for British Columbians to grieve together and recognize the victims’ contributions to their communities.

Flags across the province, including in our district, will remain at half-mast until sunset on Sunday, May 4. They will return to full mast on Monday morning, May 5, when school resumes. May is Child Care Month! Sea to Sky School District acknowledges and celebrates the incredibly valuable work of all early childhood educators and responsible adults working across the school district. We are lucky to have school district and community-based professionals facilitating early learning programming in Infant and Toddler programs, Preschool-aged programs, StrongStart, Seamless Day, and Out of School Care programs on school grounds. We know that these educators provide safe, nurturing environments that foster a sense of belonging and support the development of social and emotional skills that are foundational in a child’s life. The patience and care that these educated professionals provide to children and their families is recognized and appreciated this month and every month throughout the year!
